IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – Mathieu Comeau scored for a sixth-straight outing, then went on to assist on the game-winner, to help lift the Hearst Lumberjacks to a 5-1 victory over the Iroquois Falls Storm in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest Saturday at Jus Jordan Arena.
In extending his goal streak, Comeau opened the scoring near the five-minute mark of the first period as he opted to shoot on a two-on-one from the left wing and ripped a shot over the glove of Iroquois Falls netminder Justin Sullivan.
Answering with an equalizer at 6:35, Alexandre St. Pierre put the Storm on the board when he chased down a dump in and blasted his chance past the Lumberjacks’ Alexandre Boivin.
Retaking the lead before the end of the first period, Hearst captain Adam Shillinglaw clicked on a five-on-three by working his way down into the slot and firing a wrister into the left corner.
Going up by the pair early in the second stanza, Henry Ouellet was spotted by teammate Aiden Kalin going in alone down the middle where he took a pass and ripped it top shelf for his 15th goal of the season.
Third period action saw Hearst’s Bronson Babyak put an attempt on target that sailed up and over Sullivan before bouncing into the net at 1:27.
That resulted in a goaltending change for Iroquois Falls, as Maverick Fletcher entered in relief.
However, the Lumberjacks then finished off the scoring three and a half minutes later when Damien Bourdon-Lemoyne snagged a loose puck at his own blueline, then split the defence and while racing in alone finished off his opportunity through the pads of Fletcher.
In collecting the road triumph, Hearst improves to 22-6-0-1 overall and with the loss, the Storm fall to 10-17-1-1.
