NOJHL names its BrokerLink Insurance 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) announced Monday that defenceman Mason Chitaroni (Greater Sudbury Cubs), along with the forward duo of Alex Povorozniouk (Soo Eagles) and Aiden Kalin (Hearst Lumberjacks) have been named its BrokerLink Insurance 3 Stars of the Week, for the period ending Dec. 8.

Mason Chitaroni, (D) Greater Sudbury Cubs: Posting back-to-back three-point performances, the Cubs’ captain contributed offensively and defensively in a pair of victories last week.

The 20-year-old from Marathon, Ont., had a goal and two assists in a home ice triumph over Iroquois Falls Thursday, then dished out a trio of helpers in a road result at Kirkland Lake Friday.

Having collected 17 points in his past 10 contests, Chitaroni now sits second in league numbers among defencemen with 29 and leads all NOJHL rearguards with his 26 assists. Meanwhile, his defensive play has helped the Cubs only allow a league-low 59 goals-against.

Alex Povorozniouk, (F) Soo Eagles: The efforts of Povorozniouk aided in a pair of Eagles’ away wins over the weekend.

In all, he scored once and helped set-up five others, featuring one on the game-winner at French River Friday as well as on the tying tally, late in regulation, as part of a come from behind triumph versus Blind River the following night.

With five multi-point performances in a row, the 18-year-old from McHenry, Illinois has taken over the Eagles team scoring lead with 40 points, through 25 games, on 13 tallies and 27 assists. His total numbers also put him third overall in the NOJHL.

Aiden Kalin, (F) Hearst Lumberjacks: Another skater who had six points in two games played last week, Kalin’s contributions led Hearst to continue their winning ways.

Hailing from Calgary, Alta., the 20-year-old scored three times, including picking up a deciding marker, and aided on a trio of others in triumphs over Timmins and Kirkland Lake.

With goals in three straight, and points in four, Kalin is tied for top spot on the Lumberjacks in scoring, with 37 points, featuring a team-high 17 tallies.
